A Mindful Approach for Breathing

Since originating in China as a martial arts/self-defense practice, Tai Chi, or Tai Chi Chuan (TCC), has become a healing therapy that integrates the mind, breathing, and physical movement to maintain internal balance, inner peace, and well being 1

Western culture teaches TCC as a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practice that enhances thoughts that the mind can produce change and healing 2. Essentially, this practice focuses on healing the body through meditation, deep breathing, slow and continuous movement, body postures, and positions to develop a deeper awareness of the body and improve health outcomes 345.

Benefits of TCC

Exercise is an easy way for many people to improve their health. However, for some people, exercise has the opposite effect. Older people with bone or postural problems can have joint or posture pain or issues after intense exercise. Also, people with asthma or COPD can have breathing problems after exercise. TCC is a safe practice with positive outcomes for the elderly and people with different health conditions 1

Research studies show that TCC helps with managing chronic illnesses and pain. TCC helps relieve body pain and arthritis pain. It improves balance, flexibility, and muscle strength. TCC also helps with mental health conditions like stress, mood disturbance, depression, and anxiety 6 7 9.

TCC Is Safe for Breathing Conditions

Asthma and COPD are breathing conditions caused by irritation, inflammation, and obstruction of the airways. Prescription medications help control symptoms, but some can cause adverse effects. For that reason, people may look for alternative treatment options.

TCC has positive effects on lung function. Experts are not clear on how this happens. But, it appears to regulate the immune system and increase the number of cells that fight airway inflammation 7. The data also showed that consistent and regular TCC practice lowers FeNO (a nitric oxide that indicates airway inflammation) 7.

The Takeaway

TCC is a complementary treatment for different health conditions. TCC uses mind techniques like relaxation and mindfulness with low-intensity whole-body movements 8.
You may feel reluctant to exercise, especially if you have a breathing condition. However, TCC is a relatively safe practice for asthma because it does not involve strenuous physical movements. Compared to more traditional forms of exercise, TCC is associated with fewer effects 4. If you have postural or joint problems, consult with your healthcare provider before using TCC.
